As a partner of Hockeygear.eu, one of Europe's largest field hockey web stores, we as online marketing agency Wecommerce had been looking for ways to capture market share without the mega-budgets of our competitors since 2011. We needed to think strategically and find smart solutions to achieve profits with lower costs.
In 2017, as price wars became more frequent, we faced the challenge of keeping Hockeygear profitable. Going along with low prices would be disastrous, so we looked for alternatives.
International expansion seemed like the right move, but it had to be done without huge advertising budgets. We targeted better positions in Google, but since field hockey is a niche in many countries, it had to be very cost-effective.
A French webshop with limited sales potential simply did not offer enough room for expensive development and maintenance costs.
It quickly became apparent that setting up, maintaining and hosting separate web shops for each country was too costly, especially for smaller markets like Flanders. The annual costs quickly ran into tens of thousands of euros, which was difficult to justify in times of price pressure.
So in 2019, we joined forces with Bas van den Boom, a talented part-time programmer. His technical knowledge, combined with our experience in online marketing, led to the creation of a new idea: Clonable.
During a brainstorm in 2021, the idea of adding translation capabilities to Clonable came up. Customers regularly asked if they could easily translate their websites to reach new markets, and that led us to something big.
We built the translation function in record time, and the launch at Webwinkel Vakdagen in Utrecht was a resounding success. Within two days we saw huge interest and gained many new customers.
Soon after, we developed a feature that allowed a complete, translated demo site to be set up within five minutes.
